It’s a Warrior world

January 7, 2016

As a self-proclaimed sports fan, I have one weakness. I cannot for the life of me find interest in the passionless NBA. It is unorganized and fails greatly in comparison to college ball.
However, this season, I have a reason to watch. We all have a reason to watch. We are witnessing history. In case you were unaware, the Golden State Warriors, defending NBA Champions, have begun the season 23-0. No, that is not a typo, nor are they playing practice squads (well, except for the 76ers). They have earned each and every win, and not only have they won, but they have dominated, averaging nearly 15 more points per night than their opponents.

To put that in perspective, the 95-96 Michael Jordan-led Chicago Bulls, widely considered to be the greatest team of all-time, averaged around 12 points more than their foes. So not only have they been the best team this year, but they are 25 percent more dominant than the greatest team of all time.

Those Bulls by the way finished 72-10, the best record in NBA history, and cruised to the championship crown. Now it does not take a mathematician to calculate that the Warriors are on pace for an undefeated season. Statistically, assuming that Golden State had a 50 percent chance to win each game and that each game’s outcome was independent of the other games, the Warriors would have had a 0.000012 percent chance to win their first 23 games. While that is likely a rough estimate for their chances, they still have defied odds to begin their season in this fashion.

According to the oddsmakers in Vegas, the Warriors have been favored in all 23 of their games thus far. Their smallest closing line was their second match against the Houston Rockets on the road, which Vegas gave the Warriors just a one-point advantage in the spread. They proceeded to win that game by 20. Not surprisingly, they are currently favored in all of their final 59 regular season games, while also being given a remarkable 62.3 percent chance to win the NBA Title by Sportsbook. In other words, it would be wiser to pick the Warriors to win it all than it would be to pick the other 29 teams combined.

The 23 game win-streak to start the season is also a record. Not just an NBA record, but a North American record. Of the four major North American professional leagues, the MLB, NBA, NFL, and NHL, nobody in the history of these leagues have ever started out a season with a better record. Not the 1927 Yankees, not the dynasties of the Lakers or Celtics. Wayne Gretzky never led a team to a better start. Even the 14-0 Dolphins from 1972 lost their second game of the next season, ending their illustrious streak. This should intrigue not just NBA fans. Not exclusively basketball fans. Heck, not even just sports fans. Everyone everywhere should take notice. Whether you are a sports freak like me, or one that could care less about millionaire athletes shooting a round ball into a hoop, you should pay a little attention to this season. It does not matter if that means just checking their record every couple of weeks, do something to keep up. The 2015-16 Golden State Warriors have already proved they are a special basketball team, but now they have the opportunity to be the most dominant group of athletes in the history of America. This is a once-in-a-millenium kind of sports team, and you sure as hell do not want to miss out on that
