Busy Becker finds new tasks with school’s start

November 19, 2015

Most people will complain about how busy they are, but Brigham Becker might have better reason than most of us. After being head trainer for the past four years, Becker recently decided that he wanted to take on more responsibility, in the form of a teacher this year.

“I’ve worked with kids as the trainer and really have enjoyed it. Becoming a teacher was a way for me to expand on this part of my job.” Becker said.

This year Becker started teaching three biology and two human physiology classes.

“The knowledge from my work as a trainer transfers over, the difficult part is how to communicate the information in a way that the students understand,” Becker said.

Most people might already be overwhelmed by the workload that Becker has, but he just got a new job to put on top of it all; father to Myles Becker.

“Doing all these things at school with a two month old son means that I don’t get a lot of sleep.” Becker said “I try to plan out my day so I make sure I give every job I have the attention it deserves.”

Being a father is not the only new aspect of Becker’s life, though he just started teaching he has worked with the school to bring new courses to Millard North covering sports medicine.

“Teaching sports medicine, things like wrapping ankles, is something that I really enjoy doing. These classes have already been at Millard West and South so I’m really excited to bring them here” Becker said.

Christina Preuss is another Science teacher, and spoke about the benefits involved with these types of classes.
“These classes would be good for students that are interested in going into medicine, it allows them to learn more about this field and explore it more” Preuss said.

“I would be interested in these classes (if I was not a senior) because if would allow me to extend my knowledge of what it takes to be an athletic trainer.” Said Senior Sarah Olig.

These classes may not start until next year, but some think Mr. Becker is already making an impact on kids as a teacher. Mrs. Preuss offered why she thinks that is.

“One of the things that I think makes (Becker) so successful” Preuss said “is the energy he has. He gets here at 7 A.M. everyday and doesn’t leave until 10 P.M. sometimes, but still has a great attitude everyday.”

Being a trainer is something that Becker may love, but it is a tough job; from the days that don’t end until late to the tough situations you can get into.

“A few years ago I had a freshman football player that dislocated his ankle, and it was a situation where we had to keep a calm demeanor to try and not upset him any further, since he was screaming in pain and his foot was sideways. That something I definitely remember and I bet most of the other kids there still remember it too.” Becker said.

Brigham Becker’s job as a teacher may relate to being a trainer, but as a trainer he does have to be ready for a lot of dangerous situations. Even though he has been here a short time he is already making his mark on the school and its future.
