Meninism: Oppressing Feminism for only $26.95
November 2, 2015
A growing fad amongst teen and adult males is a group called “meninists”. Meninism is defined as the mockery of feminism disguised by “fighting for men’s rights as a oppressed gender”.
The goals of feminism over the last century have remained the same. One of the biggest benefits in the United States is the fact that everyone has equal rights and opportunity. Feminism ensures that both men and women are equal. Meninists believe that men are superior, going against the American idea of equal rights for everyone.
Meninism started as a snarky Twitter page. Even the bio of the page said “obviously sarcasm”, however the page began to gain attention and now has hundreds of thousands of followers. It was one thing to just passive aggressively retweet. Now, the followers of the page have taken their views to the real world.
The most insulting thing about the page is that it degrades the work that has been put into equal rights movements. Meninism makes the struggles put forth by women look like one big complaint against men.
Meninist’s ignorant belief that they are being “oppressed” completely goes against historical facts.
Women have been regarded mostly as housewives and mothers. And when they do hold a position in power they are a constant victim of ad hominem attack, just for being a woman.
Women did not even have the right to vote until the 20th century. Before the 19th Amenment men were the only people in society deemed worthy of having their opinion valued. This is why feminism is necessary.
However some women agree with Meninism. Many women support this belief because they, like many other men, are under the impression that feminism is about hating men. Likewise, some of these women just seek attention from their male peers by supporting Meninism. In either case, women supporting Meninism is just back-tracking on the hard work put forth by women in the past to create equality between men and women.
One claim of meninism is that men are put up to higher standards than women. They claim that the media and society in general are harder on men’s looks and behavior. However, how often do you hear the hosts of Fashion police or Extra criticizing a male celebrity’s choice of suit? That being said, there are larger expectations on women to look and be perfect everyday.
Along with social media followers, Meninistws even have their own line of t-shirts. For just $26.95, you too can share your utter disrespect for women, without even saying anything. Selling t-shirts only encourage their cause.
Meninism is an unfounded cause. In an already male-dominated world, we don’t need Meninism, we need equal rights, and we need equal opportunities among both of the sexes.
