Shining a Light on MYP Night

Students finish their personal projects for MYP night on April 14

April 6, 2016

Every year several incoming freshmen and sophomores choose to register in the IB Middle Years Program (MYP). In order to complete MYP, students must create a personal project their sophomore year that embodies their interests and individual views. These projects may encompass anything from fragrance oils, to computer programming and much more.

Many students take their own experiences and envelope them into a unique project that may impact the minds of others. Sophomore Lavanya Uppala incorporated her own personal interest into a project that was able to hold a positive influence in the public.

“I’m making a club on JAVA programming. My brother, some friends and I are volunteers at the library so we’re going to teach other teens and tweens about programming. It started because I was the only girl in my AP computer science and JAVA programming classes,” Uppala said.

Students are able to expand their own knowledge on a topic that interests them personally. In the production of a personal project the opportunity to expand a passion to the world is available in a variety of ways.

“I chose it because I’ve always loved using them topically and learning about them,” Sophomore Cecilia Rankin said.

The high quantity of work and time required to make a quality project cannot be over looked. It is undeniable that MYP students must sacrifice some time, effort, and even patience in order for their project to have an exceptional outcome.

Sophomores Dhruv Singh and Mia Shaeppi focused their projects primarily on assisting people in the community on two separate levels. Mia focused on figuring out the statistics behind the homeless population of women and children in the Omaha community.

Singh took a different approach where he focused his project on awareness of speech in the younger society.

“The greatest struggle was actually time management for me, personally, because of the fact that I do athletics as well, and I compete in forensics. Working out time just to get those middle schoolers in for a couple of ours, or a couple of minutes each and every day was a struggle but it all paid off in the end,” Singh said.

This project encompasses many components and a substantial amount of time and dedication, both in research and presentation. On April 14, MYP students will be exhibiting their projects in the library in order to display the final product of a years work.

Though managing a large work oad is crucial for the positive outcome of such a substantial project, many students are willing to put their full foot forward in both time and effort. The world is waiting for the beneficial repercussions of the impactful minds IB helps to build.
