Bearded for a cause
Teachers grow facial hair to support prostate cancer awareness
November 18, 2015
The holiday season is here again and along with it No Shave November. But this year Health Occupation Students of America or HOSA is sponsoring a No Shave November fundraiser this year.
Male teachers were asked to volunteer to grow a mustache or beard for the project. Seventeen male teachers agreed to participate in this fundraiser.
“It’s something I can do to be part of the Millard Public Schools family and volunteering by helping raise money for prostate cancer helps me to be more involved than being a math teacher and coach,” math teacher Jeff Linden said.
During lunch beginning on November 9th students can donate money to prostate cancer research in the corresponding account to the teacher they want to keep growing their facial hair.
“I don’t like to shave so I hope to make it at least until Thanksgiving. Donate to my Cause!” Spanish Teacher Shaun Hoover said.
The first two weeks the five teachers with the least amount of money donated to their corresponding collection box will have to shave their facial hair. After that one teacher per week will have to shave. Along with this HOSA will be selling raffle tickets at lunch. If a preset amount of money is raised for prostate cancer research by the selling of these tickets.
“The raffle winner will be allowed to shave Mr. Schurevich’s beard however they like!” HOSA sponsor Christina Preuss said.
This is the first year HOSA has sponsored this event at the school.
“No Shave November was created to promote Prostate Cancer research and this year HOSA wanted to highlight the importance of that and since lots of people already participate we thought this fundraiser would be a great way to emphasize that,” Senior Tanyamee Chengalasetty said.
Many teachers participate in No Shave November every year as recreation. Much like the ice bucket challenge many people participate without fully understanding the meaning behind it.
“No shave November is already popular but people didn’t know the real purpose behind it which is prostate cancer,” freshman Kierstan preuss agreed.
HOSA’s goal is to help create awareness within the student body, staff and especially their members so that in the future we can continue to raise money for this.
“HOSA is planning on doing a couple more fundraisers, and would love the support of the student body and their change for No Shave November!” Chengalasetty said.
